When you install curtains in your home, one of the primary goals is to make sure that the curtains can block the light out of the room.
But, then again, there are some cases when the curtains don’t exactly do what they are supposed to do, such as when they come in the side and the top of the curtains.
In that case, how do you stop the light from coming in the side and the top of your curtains?
You can stop light from coming in the side and the top of the curtains through these means:
- Using a wraparound curtain rod.
- Taping the gaps to the wall.
- Using foil to cover the gaps.
- Installing blinds behind the curtains.
- Using curtains that are much larger than the windows.
Any of the above ways can be great for keeping the light out of your house, especially when it passes through the side and the top of your curtains.
With that said, let’s get to know more about how you can use any of these methods so that you will be able to truly get the best out of what your curtains are supposed to do, which is to block the light out of the room.
How to block light out of the sides and the top of your curtains?
Your curtains are some of the best things you can have in a room in your home because they serve many different purposes.
Each curtain panel is there to make sure that your home looks great, especially if you could match the interior design of the home with that of the overall appeal of your curtains.
However, curtains are not always about aesthetics because they play a huge role in the overall scheme of things.
The curtains in your home are actually there to make sure that your house is protected from the elements, particularly the sunlight, whenever you want to make sure that your room is as dark as possible because you sleep during the day or simply because you just don’t like it when the room is a bit too bright.
That said, make sure that the curtains do their job by blocking the sun out of your room or making sure that the bright lights of the big city don’t get to go inside your home.
Still, the problem with some curtains is that, depending on how they are installed, they may still end up allowing light to enter the room.
And we are not talking about the light passing through the curtains but over and around them instead.
What that essentially means is that light can still pass through the sides and the top of your curtains, no matter how thick your curtains may be.
The reason light can still enter your room even with the thickest curtains possible is because there are some curtains that still have gaps in the sides and the top.
And this can be quite normal depending on the curtains that you are using.
This can be problematic, especially if you want to make sure that you get a good sleep with no lights bothering you.
So, in that regard, we have come up with a list of things that you can do to stop light from coming in the side and the top of your curtains:
Use wraparound curtain rods
So, with curtain rods, the choice of your curtain rods actually matters in making sure that your curtains completely block the light out of your room. And this is where wraparound curtain rods come into play
Wraparound curtain rods are like most other curtain rods but, instead of moving to the sides straight, the curtains can be moved all the way to the walls.
This is due to how the curtain rod is bolted to the walls in such a way that its ends curve towards the wall.
When you install your curtains on a wraparound curtain rod, the curtains will also curve towards the wall at their ends so that you will block out any light that is passing through from the sides of the curtains.
Also, keep in mind that wraparound curtains don’t keep the light from passing through the top. That means that you have to make sure that you install the curtains high enough to prevent any light from entering the room.
Tape is one of the best things you can have in your home because there are plenty of different purposes for which tape can be used.
That said, there are plenty of different tape that can be used for different purposes. Here, get a good tape that doesn’t stand out when you apply them to your curtains.
When you are using tape for your curtains, make sure that they are actually used on the spots where there are gaps so that light can’t pass through those gaps.
We recommend you use a subtle type of tape that isn’t light reflective and is also transparent so that people won’t notice it.
You can also use Velcro tape you can hide under the curtains so that you can basically Velcro the curtains together to make sure that the gaps are well covered.
Do this for both the sides and the top of the curtains.
Yes, the normal kitchen foil that you have in your home can be quite useful for keeping the light out of the sides and the top of your curtain.
That’s because foil comes with a reflective property that will basically reflect the light back outside whenever it passes through the top and the sides of your curtains.
What you need to do here is to get the foil and then cut sheets of foil that are big enough to be placed at the sides and the top of your window.
Simply tape the foil onto the sides and the top, where you usually see the light passing through.
The foil’s reflective properties will essentially reflect the light back outside so that you don’t even have to alter your curtains.
For those who don’t want to do anything to their curtains, you can use blinds that are basically supposed to be just as effective or even more effective at keeping the light out of any room because they are situated closer to the window.
So, by combining your curtains with blinds, you are basically doubling up on the overall protection you can get.
Think of it as having two layers of protection from the light because the blinds are there to filter the light that passes through the window.
The light that gets to pass through the blinds won’t be strong enough to penetrate the sides and the top of your curtains.
However, the thing you need to consider here is that you should get blinds that actually go well with your curtains. It’s tricky to combine blinds with curtains effectively in a stylish manner but, once you pull it off, it can be rewarding in terms of functionality and design.
Go for bigger curtains
When all else fails, something as simple as using larger curtains can make an entire world of differences because of how they make it more difficult for the light to pass through the sides and the top of the curtains.
That’s because such curtains are wider and longer, which essentially leaves no room for light to pass through any gap.
So, what you need to do here is to make sure that you use large curtains that will leave about a foot of extra space on each of the sides of the windows when you install the curtains.
The extra space may be enough to prevent the light from penetrating through the sides.
As to the top of the curtains, using hanging curtains can be great in keeping the light out.
Hanging curtains are curtains that are installed at a higher point above the window frame so that they will give your windows a larger look.
At the same time, hanging windows will also make it more difficult for light to pass over the top of the curtains.
What if the wind blows the curtains?
So, you did your part in making sure that the light doesn’t pass through the sides and the top of your curtains.
But what if the wind is a bit too strong, and it blows the curtains hard enough to allow light to pass through? What can you do in such a situation?
In that regard, having heavier curtains such as blackout curtains might be an excellent solution here because of how these curtains are probably too heavy for the wind to blow.
Of course, blackout curtains are also great for blocking out all of the light that passes through the window.
For those who prefer curtains that are on the lighter part, we recommend you use the tape method to tape or Velcro them to the walls of your windows so that they won’t end up getting blown so easily by the wind.
This is also effective at keeping the light out of the sides and the top of your windows.
Finally, you can weigh the curtains down if you don’t have any choice.
You can do so by inserting something heavy such as a butter knife, in the hems at the bottom of the curtains.
You will make sure that the curtains are too heavy for the wind to blow.
