How Big Should a Kitchen Window Be?

BY |

The information in this article addresses engineers, architects, and building owners. If you are working on a new house or renovating an existing home, consider kitchen window dimensions.

Before getting into the work, work on the paper design and consult a competent architect.

A good house must have standard doors and windows. A traditional house is characterized by standard windows that will pass natural light to the kitchen and give ambient space for shelves.

A standard kitchen window ranges from 61 centimeters to 120 centimeters for the width and 90 centimeters to 180 centimeters for the height. The measurements suit small, medium, and big-sized windows. The measurement varies depending on where the window is to be fixed and the design of the window.

It is now clear that window sizes vary from small to big; it is upon the owner to decide on which one to use though all can be used in a single kitchen. I have researched and presented all relevant information to kitchen windows.

Read between the lines to grasp lots of knowledge on the types of kitchen windows.

What is the size of the kitchen window above the sink?

Contents

A sink is placed at a convenient height so that the user will not strain to reach the tap and washing area. The kitchen window above the sink should give the room a clear vision of the outdoor environment and natural light.

The window should be starting just 10 centimeters from the sink and wide enough to cover the entire sink width. If curtains are essential, they should be transparent to pass light and clear vision.

I spend a lot of time in the sink washing utensils, vegetables, and chipping greens, and the outdoor environment improves concentration.

What is the size of the kitchen window below the countertop?

The countertop is the storage counters below the sink. Big windows that go beyond the sink downwards not only allow natural light but also give the philodendron and other kitchen plants in the counters to receive sunlight, thus contributing to the aesthetic appearance of the kitchen.

The distance from the sink to the frame of the window should be 1 foot and cover the entire sink width.

What is the size of the kitchen window above the backlash?

Backlash is a decoration on the wall above the kitchen counter. The most popular kitchen backlash is tile because of its availability and affordability.

The backlash is raised 4 inches above the countertop, making the window 4 inches higher.

What are the styles for kitchen windows?

Kitchen windows come in different styles, and it depends on the size of the kitchen and the owner’s specifications.

I will bring to paper the styles of kitchen windows and their sizes. Take a look.

Casement windows

A casement window is one of the earliest forms of window styles in the history of architecture. Casement windows are placed just above the sink, and it’s not a requirement to cover the entire countertop.

Casement windows are free-style because they can be designed to open inwards to outwards, or the hinges fixed either on the top or bottom of the frame for the window to open up or bottom.

A casement window has standard measurements that range from 17 inches to 73 inches in height and 14 inches to 35.5 inches in width.

As I earlier quoted that casement windows are free-style; they have a wide range of measurements, meaning that they can fit in any kitchen regardless of the size.

Double-hung window

As the name suggests, a double-hung window has two sashes that open on both sides, up and down. They are convenient when opening and allow fresh air from the environment more than casement windows.

A double-hung window has standard measurements that range from 24 inches to 48 inches in width and 36 inches to 72 inches in height. These windows would be more difficult to fit over a sink, though anything is possible with the right design.

Picture window

A picture window is a style of window that has one pane, which brings a unique picture from the outdoor environment. Unlike other styles, the picture window does not open; it is mounted permanently on the frame. They are suitable for large kitchens which need an outdoor view.

The picture window has standard measurements that range from 24 inches to 96 inches in width and 12 inches to 96 inches in height.  Picture windows are not the best for a kitchen because they do not ventilate the kitchen.

Sliding windows

A sliding window has a similar layout as a double-hung window but opens by sliding the panes horizontally along the frame from left to right and vice versa.

Sliding windows are easy to equally maximize or minimize the opening and regulate the amount of air from the external environment.

The standard measurements of a sliding range are from 36 inches to 84 inches in width and 24 inches to 60 inches in height.  Picture windows come in different styles; double and triple slide designs.

Is floor-to-ceiling kitchen window good?

Floor-to-ceiling windows are windows that represent a door, but it is closed. They are traditional designs that match the door frame with a measurement of 6 feet by 8 feet.

Floor-to-ceiling windows serve as a focal point for home occupants while in the kitchen and are suitable for large kitchens. It is good because it illuminates the kitchen and clear outside view.

Where should I place the kitchen window?

The interest in positioning the kitchen window is the eye level and visual moments from the outside environment. All house designers have several ideas when it comes to designing a kitchen, and the most important of all is where to set the window.

Kitchen windows have no specific point to place them, but there must be one window over the sink. It is clear that light is required in the kitchen and not necessarily light from a bulb. Natural light is the best in the kitchen during the day.

Kitchen windows may be two or three depending on the size of the kitchen and placed on different walls. Bringing kitchen windows to life depends on the available space and the style chosen.

The above-mentioned window styles can be fixed in the same kitchen depending on the preference and availability of the same.

Of all kitchen windows, the double-hung window is the best bet for over a sink window. The positioning of the window determines the location of the sink and cabinets. Regardless of the window style chosen, it should be positioned along or above the sink.

Can I create a cabinetry bridge across the window?

Cabinet in the kitchen has a significant role, and it is the love of every designer to incorporate it in the design. Its positioning depends on the designer’s passion and the available space.

Positioning a cabinet along the window is a great idea and eliminates the strain associated with bending when getting utensils and ingredients.

Fixing a cabinetry valance to bridge two wall cabinets creates a custom look in the kitchen. When bridging wall cabinets, the window, whichever style, has to be raised 4 inches above the sink.

However, hopper windows are not good for cabinetry bridging because they open into the home.
